Service design and systems thinking

As well as applying user centred design to the design of digital products, more public sector organisations are employing service designers to help them take a wider view of the whole end to end service.

With user journeys that span multiple teams and organisations, having someone to facilitate a joined up view is essential to reducing failure, waste and duplication in the service and making sure user needs are met. An example of this is how BT are defining common service patterns across their organisation to help services be more efficient.

UK Government Office for Science produced Systems thinking for civil servants which details how to use systems thinking to drive improved outcomes in complex situations. This includes An introductory systems thinking toolkit for civil servants.
