Accessible from the start

This week has been a learning curve. We thought we had all processes in place for publishing content but didn’t consider reports in PowerPoint format.

The digital landscape review team recently finished their alpha phase and have written a great end of alpha report.

It was produced in PowerPoint and, while we could have PDFed it and uploaded it to our website, we won’t be doing that.

Why not?

Our content should be accessible to everyone. As a GOV.WALES hosted domain, we aim to publish our content as web pages – we are in the process of publishing the report in this format, including adding alt text to images and ensuring the content is in plain English.

We’ve learned lots from this experience and will be working closely with our delivery teams on their end of phase content so it can go through our publishing process quickly.

This will be the first report we have published on our website, and we hope it can be used as a template for future reports. Once published – we’d love your feedback!

You can read more on the Welsh Government website about accessible content. Even if you’re not a GOV.WALES site, this is still good practice.

Building better Welsh language services with user research

A fab session this week with Gruffydd Weston, a Welsh language user researcher at HMRC.

We had 20 people in attendance and Gruff used Sli.do for the community to have their say, before revealing findings from his team’s research. What do Welsh users think about website design (access points to Welsh services) and why do they deviate from completing tasks in Welsh?

The recording and full presentation are on the bilingual services community Teams channel. If you’re not a member - you can register.

The team have compiled a survey to gather further insights. While some of the questions are HMRC specific, others are broad, and the findings will help us all understand some of the pain points and barriers to using Welsh language services. Please share the survey.

Blogs: service standards and primary care

We’ve published several blog posts this week – it’s great to see our new content production process in operation.

Keep. It. Simple… Content design - a summary of our last knowledge sharing webinar, on content design

Tell us: how do we bring Digital Service Standards to life? - we want to speak to providers of Welsh public services about how we can make the service standards useful to them
