Chief Digital Officers and CDPS working in the open

The digital ecosystem in Wales is confusing.

Did you know that, along with Myra and Harriet, our joint CEOs, there’s also a chief digital officer (CDO) with responsibility for the Welsh Government (Glyn Jones) and a chief digital officer with responsibility for local government (Sam Hall)?

The Welsh Government is currently recruiting the missing piece of the jigsaw - a CDO with responsibility for health.

CDPS and the CDOs meet regularly, with an agreed list of priorities to work on together.

Our head of comms, Edwina, Sarah (from Sam Hall’s team) and Rita (from Glyn Jones’s team) have come up with a plan to help the group work in the open on their collective priorities.

Why is this important?

There’s lots of overlap in the issues CDPS and the CDOs are addressing – many of the challenges and opportunities they’ve identified span more than one sector. We all need to show that we’re pooling resources and not duplicating effort.

There’s a really good story to tell. The group is open, supportive and passionate about delivering better public services, aligned with mission 1 in the Digital Strategy for Wales. We want our leaders to ‘walk the walk’ when it comes to working in the open, and they all agree that this is the right thing to do.

From September, the group will provide a monthly progress update on priorities. We’ll share the updates on our collective channels and review how they’re landing at the end of the year.

Croeso, Alaw!

What a week! writes the comms team’s new translator, Alaw John.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting some amazing people, and getting to know the ins and outs of an exciting organisation – from meeting many of the team for the first time online, to having a face-to-face meeting with Edwina on Thursday morning, from being shown the ropes by Simon and translating my first piece of work, to drawing a camel (!!!) and having the privilege of ‘ringing the bell’ – a CDPS end-of-week tradition, it seems.

It’s been a blast, and a complete honour to become a part of this team. I hope that, with my help, we can ensure that the bilingualism aspect of CDPS is as natural as it can be. I hope we can support organisations to build bilingual services that have the needs of Welsh speakers at the forefront - forming a path to a more effective way of translating.
